When Amelia Came to Michigan” is a 60 minutes lecture and visual presentation created in the Spring 2014 is the real life story of Amelia Earhart’s adventures in Michigan. Our many years of research indicates she was here more than 25 times promoting the aviation industry and opportunities for women in this field. Our lecture and visual presentation begins with her childhood at the turn of the century, her family life and education, early flying experiences, the world records and her 8 years of adventures in Michigan. Over a 10 year period, we collected Michigan newspaper articles about Amelia, also hundred’s of photographs, old film footage, plus the music from the 1920’s and 30’s. Our lecture presentation reveals the life and times of the woman who flew for the fun of it. (more)

7:00 pm Drummond Island's Part in the War of 1812
This narration and slide presentation led by author Jill Brumwell begins with Native Americans and their introduction to Europeans in the 1600's and concludes with the final episode in the War of 1812, which took place on Drummond Island in 1828, thirteen years after the Peace Treaty was signed. You will be fascinated with the tales of deserters, the mysterious disappearance of a wealth of gold concealed in an iron kettle, and the pageantry described by Dr. Bigsby when he arrived at Drummond's Fort Collier with a fleet of twenty-five canoes from Mackinac Island. He wrote of fourteen in his canoe not counting a bear and three dogs. (more)

Free Massages at the Third Annual Community Massage and Wellness Expo What better way to ease your stress than learning about how to stay healthy and then receiving a free massage? Start your holiday season relaxed by attending the Third Annual Community Massage and Wellness Expo during the American Massage Therapy Association’s National Massage Therapy Awareness Week. Local massage therapists will be giving free chair and table massages on Saturday, October 25, from 10am-2pm at Grand Haven’s Loutit District Library. The Third Annual Community Massage and Wellness Expo, presented by LotusTouch Massage and BOD-E-NOMICS, features free massages, door prizes and drawings for massage services, Yoga classes, and the opportunity to talk to local health professionals. “We’re hosting the event to promote National Massage Therapy Awareness Week and to show the community the health benefits of massage,” said Wendy Schweifler, CEO of BOD-E-NOMICS and licensed massage therapist. “Also, if you’re looking for a therapist, you can come and try out different styles!” One Yoga class (12pm) will be taught by Jane Donnelly of Hago Yoga. Yoga is a great supplement to massage because it challenges people to “be here now,” allowing the mind and body to work together with holding specific poses to strengthen and lengthen. Since one focuses on holding and breathing during the practice of Yoga, a state of calm and relaxation has been known to transpire. Yoga is a great supplement to massage because it helps ease tensions, anxieties and stresses of a hectic lifestyle.
