The Loutit District Library Book Club will meet to discuss this month's selection, The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey by Rinker Buck. The author recounts his two-thousand-mile trip on the Oregon Trail the old-fashioned way, in a covered wagon with a team of mules, and discusses the rich history of the trail, the people who made the migration, and its significance to the United States. This class is for the basic Microsoft Excel user who wants to expand their skills. You should have a basic understanding of Excel or have taken the Introduction to Excel class. 12:00 am Loutit District Library’s Featured Local Artist Arthur Lazaryan
Lower Level Hallway Artist Statement: “In my art works I often show the changes that happen in us and around us – past, present, and future. The colors and shapes represent time and people, as well as the dynamic flow of joy in and appreciation of life.” Arthur Lazaryan’s love of drawing, painting, and sculpting started at the age of six. By the time he was a teenager, he had already participated in several group and solo exhibitions in Armenia, and throughout Europe and Asia. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering and design. His first show in the United States was at the Contemporary Fine Art Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. Arthur's art is displayed in public and private collections worldwide. He currently resides in Michigan where he is active as an artist. Arthur has worked with many media. The landscapes and diverse beauty of Michigan inspire his work. (more)

Join underwater explorer and author Valerie van Heest as she travels back in time and deep beneath Lake Michigan to explore the wreck of the John V. Moran, holed and sunk by the ice in February 1899 between Grand Haven and Muskegon. She will share the trials of research, the frustration of the search, and the excitement as she and fellow teammates of the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association discover and explore the most intact shipwreck in Lake Michigan. Upper Level Lobby The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will be holding swearing-in ceremonies of new US citizens at Loutit District Library. Each ceremony is scheduled to last about an hour with new citizens, emigrating from many different nations, taking the oath of allegiance. A small reception, hosted by the library, will take place immediately following each ceremony on the Lower Level in Program Room A. All are welcome. (more)

7:00 pm Author of “Through the Eyes of Rose” John Kozak
Program Room A John Kozak's book, a true story written as a tribute to his mother Rose, details how at age 42, in October of 1949, she defied the Czechoslovakian Communists by fleeing into the Bohemian Forest with John and his sister. Headed for the safety of West Germany, she was betrayed by a guide, hunted by tracking dogs, and nearly captured by a Soviet patrol before reaching safety.
