10:00 am US Naturalization Ceremonies
Upper level Lobby The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will be holding swearing-in ceremonies of new US citizens at Loutit District Library, one at 10:00 a.m. and one at 1:30 p.m. Each ceremony is scheduled to last about an hour with new citizens, originating from many different nations, taking the oath of allegiance. A small reception, hosted by the library, will take place immediately following each ceremony. All are welcome. (more)

You should have a basic understanding of Word or have taken the Introduction to Word class. We will learn about tables, paragraph layout and formatting, format painter, headers & footers, quick parts, auto correct and text boxes.  Placing X: A Novel in Michigan Cultural History
Join Michigan historian Dr. Michelle S. Johnson as she discusses the life and times of Malcolm X, focusing on his years growing up in Michigan, the lasting legacy of his teachings, the Civil Rights Movement, and the impact on Michigan's cultural history. This program is a prelude to an October 11 author visit by Kekla Magoon, co-author of the award-winning novel, X: A Novel. The Great Michigan Read is presented by the Michigan Humanities Council with support from Meijer and the National Endowment for the Humanities. (more)

The Loutit District Library Book Club will meet to discuss this month's selection, Hero of the Empire: The Boer War, a Daring Escape, and the Making of Winston Churchill by Candice Millard. Author Millard presents a narrative account of Churchill's heroics during the Boer War, describing his daring escape from rebel captors, trek through hundreds of miles with virtually no supplies, and eventual return to South Africa to liberate the soldiers captured with him. Detroit area artist Jane Alkon presents a Lunch and Learn session on the Bauhaus and the Nazis. The Bauhaus School of Design, founded in 1919, was an art collective and educational community that combined art with design, craftsmanship and technology in a politically and socially changing German society. It remains, to this day, the single most influential source of design in the world. Political tensions in a post WWI Germany, coupled with the rise of Nazi power as the world was readying for the Second World War, ultimately forced the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933. (more)
