10:00 am Bike Kensington to Island Lake Rec. Area.
We will do the 8 mile scenic loop around Kent Lake then head UNDER I-96 to Island Lake State Park, River Bend picnic area. Pace 10 to 12 mph. Total distance, 15 miles with options for 8 or 23. Required: helmet, water, snack and extra tube. Optional: a brown bag lunch to eat under the shady oaks after the ride. Meet 10am in Kensington Park. 9:15 am Canoe the Upper Huron.
Our 4 hour canoe trip starts below the dam in Island Lake State Park. Some experience necessary. Paddle 1.5 hours down to our lunch spot, then go through the wild part to Placeway Bridge. Trout, kingfishers and great blue herons are usually seen. Must phone leader to reserve your spot by 5/20; $22 each covers canoe rental fees and shuttle. We will do a 6 mile hike at a moderate to quick pace, over rolling hills and lush greenery. Some fascinating vistas and vernal ponds and large meadows to stop and look at. Be sure to bring water for a warm spring day, hiking boots for the rocky trails, and meet in Southfield at Tel-12 Mall, S.E. corner of Telegraph and 12 Mile Rd. 6:30 pm Monthly Hump Day Evening Paddle at Stony Creek MetroPark.
Soothe your harried workaday nerves (or recover from the rigors of the retiree lifestyle!) with an easy, relaxing after-work, mid-week paddle at Stony Creek MetroPark. Bring your own kayak or canoe, or rent one there. We'll paddle until 8pm. This is an easy, casual outing for any ability level. PFD use is mandatory. PFDs & paddles are included with rentals. 10:00 am [E] (Sat.) Kensington MetroPark Summer Wildflower Walk.
Walk 3-4 miles at a slow-moderate pace with frequent stops to admire and ID whatever we may find. This is not a usual wildflower spot, but I found a lot here 2 summers ago. Optional: bring a brown bag lunch and enjoy the little nearby peninsula and maybe see sandhill cranes there again. Bring water, insect repellent and sunscreen. Enjoy a moderately paced 3 mile hike through some of the less traveled trails in this lovely rolling park, site of the former TB Sanitarium. We'll enjoy the birds and abundant wildflowers in the fields and woods as we go. Meet at the park concession bldg, Eight Mile Rd. entrance, 1.5 miles west of Beck Rd. We will hike the 5 mile Crooked Lake trail, west of Ann Arbor. It weaves all around Crooked Lake, with lots of hills to challenge us. Bring good hiking shoes, water and trail snack for this adventurous hike. Meet in Livonia on the southeast corner of Middlebelt and I-96 in the Costco lot. Lets do a summer trek at this State Park near Fenton. We will hike at an easy pace over the rolling terrain, seeing meadows ablaze with the wildflowers of early summer.
