9:30 am Maybury 52nd Aniversary Hike.
Let’s celebrate the 52nd Anniversary of the Federal Wilderness Act – by hiking through the wilderness trails of Maybury State Park, near Northville. We will be in the dark canopy of trees most of the way for 5 miles, with views of the lake, creeks, prairies, horse trails and frog ponds. I promise to bring us back to civilization for a restaurant and ice cream stop after. Meet at 9:30 at Trailhead building, Park entrance is on Eight Mile Road, west of Beck Road. Phil, 248-797-2885. A 6-mile trek through woods and meadows ablaze with the colors of late summer. We will do an easy pace over the rolling terrain passing around 6-lakes. Bring boots, water and snacks. 11:00 am Cindys Birthday Belle Isle Bike Ride.
Let’s meet in front of the Old Casino, near the big fountain, then get our bikes ready for a tour around the outside loop on the Island, and crossing some of the landmark roads inside also. Possibly 10 miles. If weather is good, we might go on the river walk (ride) and the DeQuinder Cut toward Eastern Market. Bike helmet necessary, water, snacks, tire repair tools, pump a good idea. We will walk the paved paths between all the newer exhibits, stopping to marvel at all the animals, when we pass. We will spend time in the brand new Penguin House, see the newest giraffe born recently, and many other areas. Park in the surface lot, or parking structure near the zoo entrance, and meet outside the main gates at 11am. There are parking and entrance fees. Restaurant stop after. 11:00 am Carpenter Lake Nature Preserve (Southfield) Exploration
Meet at the trailhead. We’ll slow walk 1-2 miles in this delightful urban gem, stopping for both interpretive and natural signs. Bring lunch or snack to enjoy in the middle of the walk, while overlooking Carpenter Lake. See woodlands, wetlands and meadows plus constructed elements designed to preserve and protect this branch of the Rouge River. Meet in the Heritage Park Nature Center lot (Farmington Rd, between 10 and 11 Mile Rd) for the start of a 2-for-the-price-of-1 hike: on the Heritage Park trails, over the Rouge River, on some nice hills, looking for the fall colors. Then, drive 1 mile north to Woodland Hills Nature Preserve and explore another undeveloped gem in the middle of a large suburban city: more woods, creeks to cross and a wetland to observe. This will be a 21 mile loop trail over 3 days, S.E. of Traverse City. Trail offers scenic views, great fall colors, serenity of the forest, streams to cross and Manistee River overlooks. Fife Lake Village is now a Trail Town, nice to stop in for a rest. It is a perfect sized loop for the weekend. Drive up Friday, back on Sunday. Must have backpacking experience. Lets give ourselves a good workout on this premier trail system, west of Ann Arbor. This fall hike is wooded and hilly, with lots of creek and lake sightings. From I-96, exit 159 North onWixom Road. Turn right at the Proud Lake HQ building on Wixom Road, go a short distance past that, then left into a large parking lot. Meet the group there near the trailhead sign. We’ll do a moderately paced hike of about 5 gently rolling miles, enjoying fall colors as we view the red pine stands, the Huron River flowing by, and perhaps the marshland.
