Last year the snow and ice were piled high along the shore here, lets go hike about 6 miles of trails and shore to see this natural North Pole event. 10:00 am Ski Huron Meadows M.P.
If March came in like a lion, we will have one last ski on the well groomed trails at this MetroPark near Brighton. There are ski rentals in the golf shop bldg. If no snow, bring hiking boots, and we will hike the ski trails, nature trails and search for signs of spring in the sunny spots. Possible resident bluebird sightings. Bring trail snacks, water. 11:00 am Pontiac Lake State Park Hike
We will hike 4-5 miles in this park that we have not visited since last year. Woods, meadows, rolling hills and, hopefully, instead of snow and ice, some skunk cabbage, our earliest harbinger of spring. Many of the hills we will hike face the south, and might have spring warmth on them. Optional restaurant stop after. 1:00 pm Hike the Canton Lower Rouge Trail
Enjoy a leisurely hike to start March off along the Canton linear trail system that follows the Lower Rouge River. Choose between a 3 mile or 6 mile hike. The wide trails weave in and out, crossing the river 7 times (on bridges). There is a carved totem to study midway and several spots with benches. Optional restaurant stop after. 11:00 am Proud Lake Hike
Hike about 5 miles at a moderate pace in this level, wooded park along the Huron River. We will cross the river to access the trails on the far side, and stop on the bridge to see if the trout are hanging out near the weir. Interesting bogs and river views with chance for skunk cabbage sightings. Bring water & boots; goes rain or shine. Optional restaurant stop after. From I-96 exit 159, follow Wixom Rd. 10:00 am Phils Mud and Moosetracks Hike
Sometimes on Phils birthday hikes, there are icy trails, sometimes there is mud, and moosetracks. We will hike the hilly Maybury State Park trails through thick forests, around ponds and creeks, overlooking meadows, for a 5 mile moderate paced hike. Possible mud on trails. Meet at the park concession bldg, Eight Mile Rd. entrance, 1-1/2 miles west of Beck Rd. (and Northville); 5 miles west of I-275. Restaurant stop after (thats where the moosetracks ice cream will be). Hike the woods, meadows and rolling nature trails adjacent to the Nature Center. We will hike about 4-5 moderately-paced miles, depending on trail conditions. This might be the best Metropark to see if 'Spring Is Just Around The Corner'. We will take the hilly Nature Trails for a 5 Mile loop. Deer are usually seen on this trail, and perhaps the Great Blue Herons will be standing in their nests. Meet in Southfield at Tel-12 Mall, S.E. corner of Telegraph and 12 Mile Rd. We will start at the Environmental Center for a 4-mile hike looking for the earliest Spring blooms of skunk cabbage, hepatica, bloodroot and other wildflowers. The ponds should have migrating ducks and cranes. We will do an easy pace. Bring boots, water and trail snacks. Lets give ourselves a good workout on this premier trail system, west of Ann Arbor. This spring hike is wooded and hilly, with lots of creek and lake sightings. We will go a brisk pace, with 2 snack breaks, plus your trail lunch at a remote campspot. Bring plenty of water, lunch, sunscreen and meet in Southfield at Tel-12 Mall, S.E. corner of Telegraph and 12 Mile Rd. Park facing Telegraph, S. of the Marathon station.
