Our 3-4 hour canoe trip starts below the dam in Island Lake State Park. Trout, kingfishers and great blue herons abound on this stretch. Some experience necessary. Must phone leader to reserve your spot by 5/12; $22 each covers canoe rental fees. Dress for the weather, bring a dry bag for extra clothes, and a picnic lunch for on the river. A special event. Picnic, hike into the sunset, come back with the moonrise! Bring your beverage and a dish to pass. After we eat, we walk 3, 4 miles of nature trails, leaving at 7:30 and returning with the full moon (9:15pm). Bring long sleeves for the evening chill, meet at Maybury State Park, horse stable parking lot (picnic shelter) Take Eight Mile Rd. to Beck Road (2 miles west of Northville); go south on Beck .5 mile to entrance on west side. Hike 3-4 miles total at a moderate pace, starting in Heritage Park (with Rouge River views and crossing). Then we will travel 1 mile north to Woodland Hills Nature Preserve for another surprisingly beautiful hidden natural area with more dense woods and meadows, plus a creek and a pond. Meet 11am in Farmington Hills Heritage Park in the visitor center lot. Turn west off Farmington Rd. (between 10 and 11 Mile) and left at 1st road. Optional restaurant stop after. Inge, 248-338-0906.
