Yes, if you really want to see migrating warblers and other spring birds, you have to get up early. We are going to be led by two experienced birders, who will help find the birds by sound and sight. Bring binoculars, bird guidebooks, warm clothing for a SLOW walk, stopping often to observe. Meet by 8am at entrance to the E.I.C. building on U of M Dearborn campus (ON Evergreen, S of Ford Road). Early jack in the pulpits, many wildflowers and the croaking of pond dwellers will be announcing Springs return to the shorelines, meadows and lakes of this very scenic habitat. We will hike 6 miles on rolling terrain. Bring water and snacks. Boots highly recommended. Trilliums and Marsh Marigolds should greet us as we hike 5-miles at a moderate to brisk pace, over hill and dale, through valleys with vernal ponds, and tree topped hills. If we are lucky, the redbud blossoms will be at their peak bloom when we ride in this linear park along the River. We will go about 20 miles total on a paved, mostly level bike trail with options to shorten or lengthen. Bring a picnic lunch for after the ride. Lets start early, to see the early blooms. We will do a slow paced 3-mile walk to usher in Spring and honor our Earthly Mothers and Mother Earth! We will stop often to I.D. the 17 species of wildflowers (list provided) as we explore the trails. This advanced hike is 9.3 miles long, hilly, wooded, full of lakes and streams. Bring a BIG trail lunch and LOTS of water. This trail is considered the most scenic hike in the Pinckney area. We will explore this new trail system that follows the Lower Rouge River: walk 3 miles of linear trails at a moderate pace or 6 miles if we go both ways. The wide trails weave in and out, crisscrossing the river occasionally, and several benches offer scenic respite. View a carved totem, spring wildflowers, and possible small critters. Lets visit both nature preserves today, enjoying the 3-mile hilly trails of W. Bloomfield Nature Preserve first, then going to the fairly level trails of the Orchard Lake Preserve nearby. The mayflowers should be really showy in the deep woods, and lots of scilla on the 1.5 mile trail at Orchard Lake Preserve. Our 4 hour canoe trip starts below the dam in Island Lake State Park. Some experience necessary. Drift 1.5 hours down to our lunch spot, then go through the wild part to Placeway Bridge. Trout, kingfishers and great blue herons are usually seen. Must phone leader to reserve your spot by 5/20; $22 each covers canoe rental fees and shuttle. Hike in and out of the Huron River basin to enjoy the peonies in bloom and the wonders of the prairie in Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor. Birds and azaleas might be seen along the Huron. A 5-mile hike at a moderate pace, but with the challenge of hills. Meet in Northville in the MDOT parking lot on the 8 Mi side of Meijer's, s.w. corner of 8 Mi and Haggerty. Take a leisurely 15-17 mile ride, RT, using the new connector trail between these parks. The trail is level, newly paved, with some woods and goes thru Flat Rock and its scenic Huroc Park right on the Huron River. We’ll head to the boat launch at Lake Erie MP, enjoy lunch in view of the Lake, then return to our cars. Optional extension ride from the parking lot. Bring water and picnic lunch.
