Letís get two-for-one for Valentines Day; we will walk the hilly nature trails at West Bloomfield Nature Preserve, then walk the rails to trails path to the pond overlook, and down to the Orchard Lake Preserve. This will be a 5 mile walk at a moderate pace, with stops to look for winter animals along the way. Restaurant stop after. This park near Fenton is about the closest you can get to Up North winter hiking around here. We will do a moderately challenging, hilly hike in this lovely park (2-3 hours). If there is enough snow, (more than 4Ē) bring your snowshoes if you have them. Yak Trax or other traction devices recommended if just hiking. Enjoy a moderately paced, 5-mile hike through several interesting habitats. We will see fall vegetation sticking through the frozen marshes, and animal tracks in the snow. We will start at the Nature Center, and take all the nature trails from there, over hilly terrain, for a moderately paced 5 mile hike. This is the season for returning BIG bird life, so we will scan for the Great Blue Herons, Egrets, Sandhill Cranes and Black Capped Chickadees. Well, maybe the chickadees are not BIG. Fife Lake and the North Country Trail, S.E. of Traverse City. This will be a 21 mile loop trail over 2 days. Trail offers scenic views, serenity of the forest, streams to cross and Manistee River overlooks. Fife Lake Village is now a Trail Town, nice to stop in for a rest. This short backpack trip will be in absolutely beautiful Pigeon River State Forest, East of Vanderbilt, home of the Michigan Elk herd. We might not see any of the Elk, but will certainly see much native flora and fauna. We will extend the 11 mile trail Shingle Mill backpack trail to 15 miles by hiking part of High Country Pathway. This will be a combination of hiking and kayaking. First hike 9 miles on the Mason Track trail, East of Grayling, with spectacular landscape, and looks at the native flora and fauna.
