First Day of Winter Hike.

Heritage Park in Farmington Hills has such a wide variety of habitats, I am sure that we will find evidence of snow on this first day of the winter season. We will take all the trails for a 4.5 mile hike. Deer and squirrels will be evident in their winter coats. If 6 inches of snow, wear your YakTraks. Meet in Farmington Hills Heritage Park in the visitor center lot. Turn west off of Farmington Rd. (between 10 and 11 Mile) and left at 1st road. Restaurant stop after. Phil; 248-797-2885.

Hike the Canton Lower Rouge Trail.

Enjoy a leisurely hike to bring in the new year along the linear trail system that follows the Lower Rouge River. Choose between a 3 mile or a 6 mile hike. The wide trails weave in and out, crossing the river 7 times (on bridges). There is a carved totem to study midway and several spots with benches. Meet: 10am at the trailhead: From I-275, go west on Michigan Ave. 1.5 miles. Turn north onto Morton Taylor Road, left into parking lot. Optional restaurant stop after. Leader: Diane, 734-718-5845C

Ski the groomed, wooded trails of Hartwick Pines, including the famous Candlelight Ski trail (if offered). Hanson Hills and others nearby for a full weekend of XC ski fun. Trails are groomed for classic and skate styles. Make your own lodging arrangements in one of Grayling’s many nice locally owned motels located along M­93 (Business I­75) on the way to Hartwick Pines. Enjoy a moderately-paced, 5-mile hike through forest, wetland, pond and Huron Riverside habitats. We will pause on the Huron River dam to look for the resident trout. Hike goes snow or shine so dress accordingly. From I-96, take Exit 159, follow Wixom Rd. N. 7 miles, follow park signs to trailhead parking lot east of ranger station. Optional restaurant stop after. Enjoy 2-3 hours of skiing on the best-groomed 15 miles of trails in SE Michigan. Experienced skiers will enjoy hilly and flat terrain with woods and meadows while beginners can rent equipment and ski adjacent to the golf-ski center. Enjoy a view of the Huron River and maybe some brave winter kayakers. Meet 12pm in Northville in the MDOT parking lot on the 8 Mi. side of Meijer's, SW corner of 8 Mi. and Haggerty. Hike in and out of the Huron River basin to enjoy the wonders of Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor. A 5 mile hike at a moderate pace, but with the challenge of hills. Meet at 10am in Northville in the MDOT parking lot on the 8 Mi side of Meijer's, s.w. corner of 8 Mi and Haggerty.
