Join Sierra Club and W. S. U. for a 12-mile green water infrastructure bike tour of Detroit. On this moderately-paced 3 hour bike tour you will stop to see rain gardens, green roofs, permeable pavers, rain barrels, and other examples of green solutions in the city. Lets give ourselves a good workout on this premier trail system, west of Ann Arbor. This spring hike is wooded and hilly, with lots of creek and lake sightings. We will go a brisk pace, with 2 snack breaks, plus your trail lunch at a remote campspot. Bring plenty of water, lunch, sunscreen and meet in Southfield at Tel-12 Mall, S.E. corner of Telegraph and 12 Mile Rd. Park facing Telegraph, S. of the Marathon station. Yes, if you really want to see spring migrants, you must get up early.Two experienced birders will help find birds by sound and sight. Bring binoculars, bird books, warm clothing for a SLOW walk, stopping often to observe. We will take the trail on EIC grounds & then through the campus to the Rouge River. Lets hike 5-7 miles on this interesting U of M property. We might be able to visit the Observatory, and see the high Peach Mountain Radio Tower. Very rolling trails with lots of hills at the end. Need good hiking shoes, bring water and trail snacks. Meet in Livonia on the southeast corner of Middlebelt and I-96 in the Costco lot. Park closest to Middlebelt and Jeffries Frwy. Lets start early, to see the early blooms. We will do a slow paced 3-mile walk to usher in Spring and honor our Earthly Mothers and Mother Earth! We will stop often to I.D. the 17 species of wildflowers (list provided) as we explore the trails. Bring cameras, magnifiers, field guides, and meet at Maybury State Park; 8 Mile Rd. entrance, 1.5 miles west of Beck Rd. (and Northville). Lets visit both nature preserves today, enjoying the 3-mile hilly trails of W. Bloomfield Nature Preserve first, then going to the fairly level trails of the Orchard Lake Preserve nearby. The mayflowers should be really showy in the deep woods, and lots of scilla on the 1.5 mile trail at Orchard Lake Preserve. Hike in and out of the Huron River basin and enjoy U of M Nichols Arboretum prairie and the ridges. A 5-mile hike at a moderate pace, but with the challenge of hills. We will be passing spring flowers, and Redbud trees out in bloom, as we bike from Lower Huron MetroPark, ride through 3 parks to Oakwoods Nature Center. We will have lunch there, then return. We will do the 8 mile scenic loop around Kent Lake then head UNDER I-96 to Island Lake State Park, River Bend picnic area. Pace 10 to 12 mph. Total distance, 15 miles with options for 8 or 23. Required: helmet, water, snack and extra tube. Optional: a brown bag lunch to eat under the shady oaks after the ride. Meet 10am in Kensington Park. Our 4 hour canoe trip starts below the dam in Island Lake State Park. Some experience necessary. Paddle 1.5 hours down to our lunch spot, then go through the wild part to Placeway Bridge. Trout, kingfishers and great blue herons are usually seen. Must phone leader to reserve your spot by 5/20; $22 each covers canoe rental fees and shuttle.
