Like a Triathalon but more fun, less work! Meet 10am at the Story Creek Nature Center for a 4-mile hike on the nature trails. About noon, enjoy your brown bag lunch in the company of other outdoors lovers. Everyone knows about the hilly trails in Holly, we will take the longer trails, for a 9 mile hike around lakes, and through the woods. The leaves will be deep and crunchy, so our noisy progress will probably scare wildlife away. Bring lunch and beverage, there will be a high overlook of the lake halfway for a rest and lunch stop. This metropolitan pocket park is a jewel with an easy three mile loop through the oldest arboretum in Michigan, featuring fairy tale European beech trees, and many other species. Enjoy 2 of this suburb parks with great woods, meadows, flat and gently rolling terrain, the Rouge River, a stream AND a pond! We might spot some turkeys trying to hide before thanksgiving! We'll hike about 4 miles total at an easy-to-moderate pace. Meet 11am in Farmington Hills Heritage Park in the visitor center lot. Turn west off Farmington Rd. Lets overcome all the turkey and fixins of Thanksgiving by heading to Kensington Metropark for a 5-mile hike. We will walk the winding nature trails, climb seven hills at a moderate to brisk pace, stop to look for migrating birds on Wildwing Lake, for a hike equal to 1,348 calories. We will hike 6 medium-paced miles in hilly, wooded terrain around McGinnis Lake. We may spot some water fowl or the beaver that has been chewing lake edge saplings. We will hike about 3 miles at a moderate pace over relatively flat ground through woods and fields and watch for dried wildflowers and 3 species of squirrels readying for winter. Heritage Park in Farmington Hills has such a wide variety of habitats, I am sure that we will find evidence of snow on this first day of the winter season. We will take all the trails for a 4.5 mile hike. Deer and squirrels will be evident in their winter coats. If 6 inches of snow, wear your YakTraks.
