We will be passing spring flowers, and Redbud trees out in bloom, as we bike from Lower Huron MetroPark, ride through 3 parks to Oakwoods Nature Center. We will have lunch there, then return. Let’s start early, to see the early blooms–we will do a slow paced 3-mile walk to usher in Spring and honor our Earthly Mothers and Mother Earth! We will stop often to I.D. the 17 species of wildflowers (list provided) as we explore the trails. Bring cameras, magnifiers, field guides, and meet at Maybury State Park; 8 Mile Rd. entrance, 1.5 miles west of Beck Rd. (and Northville). Go right to the far parking lot, meet at the Trailhead bldg. We will hike the Paint Creek Trail, seeing some interesting vistas, flowering plants and hilly terrain. This will be a 5 mile, moderate to brisk pace that ends in Lake Orion for a lunch stop, then return for a TOTAL of 10 miles. Bring plenty of water, trail snacks, and meet at 11am in Troy on 14 Mile Rd. just east of I-75 (south edge of Oakland Mall) - behind the Bank of America. Meet 11am in the Heritage Park Nature Center parking lot for the start of another 2-for-the-price-of-1 hike: thru the woods, over the Rouge River, up and down some easy hills all the while checking for wildflowers. Then, drive 1 mile north to Woodland Hills Nature Preserve and explore another undeveloped gem in the middle of a large suburban city: more woods, creeks to cross and a wetland to observe. An easy, relatively level hike in Macomb Co. A nice wooded, shady hike through the woods, we might see nesting great blue herons so bring binoculars. This 3.5 mile hike, with an ice cream stop in the middle at the cider mill, would be perfect for beginners. Meet at 1pm in Bloomfield Hills behind the CVS (SE corner of Woodward and Square Lake Rd. Tour northern Macomb County farmlands on this paved rail-trail, a scenic ride in the country. We’ll ride 11 miles at a 12-15 mph pace, to a restaurant in Romeo, have a leisurely lunch and then it’s a nice, slight, down-hill 11 miles back. Helmet, spare tube and water required. Meet 9:45am in Algonac, NE corner of McDonald’s parking lot to unload bikes: (700 Pointe Tremble Rd). Depart at 10am. Biking on very flat island roads. We will cycle ¼ mi. to the free ferry; cross the St. Clair River to the Island; enjoy views of the river, freighters, sail boats, quaint Victorian homes, and distant Detroit; and ride 20 miles on paved roads. This will be a combination of hiking and kayaking. First hike 9 miles on the Mason Track trail, East of Grayling, with spectacular landscape, and looks at the native flora and fauna.
