Join us for an afternoon hike along the last untouched mile of US shoreline along the Detroit River. Observe the plants and animals that use this unique habitat and learn how it was saved from the threat of development by thousands of dedicated residents, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Meet at the Refuge Gateway, 5437 W. Jefferson Ave., Trenton, MI, on the east side of Jefferson Avenue, south of Van Horn Street and north of Vreeland Ave. (It's a marsh! Wear your mud boots!) HVG members meet at Zingerman's Roadhouse, 2501 Jackson Ave. We will leave Ann Arbor by 11:30 am.

North Manitou Island, part of Sleeping Bear National Lake Shore

Base Camp service backpacking trip on N. Manitou Island., Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. Trip Involves a 1 & 1/2 hour round trip ferry trip, backpacking, camping, food preparation, volunteer work on the island. Work on Service projects on Sat., enjoy the island Sunday. The island is managed as wilderness. Camping is primitive. Reservation April 1st due to non-refundable ferry tickets. Trip limit 16. Adults 16 and older only. Hike 4-5 miles around Pickerel Lake in the Pinckney Rec Area with ace outdoorsman Barry Lonik; optional swim afterwards. Either meet at the picnic table in front of Zingerman’s Roadhouse at 1:00 pm to carpool or at 1:45 at the trail: Take Dexter-Ann Arbor Road west through Dexter; go west on Island Lake Rd 3 miles to Dexter-Townhall Rd; turn right, north, to N Territorial Rd; turn left, go west 1.5 miles to Hankerd Rd; turn right, go north 1 mile; turn right onto Pickerel Lake access road. Non-members welcome. Free.

Native plants are central to the design of many of the gardens at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. Connie Crancer, Native Plant Specialist, will show us native species resilience and use in bioswales that manage storm water, formal prairie wildflower garden, and more. Grand Island Ferry Service (M-28, 3-4 miles west of Munising Munising, MI)

Grand Island is a national recreation area located in Lake Superior, just off the Munising and Pictured Rocks shoreline. We will back pack to Juniper Flats and Murray Bay campsites, spending two nights at each site with day hikes on the off days. Terrain is a mixture of sandy beaches and sandstone cliffs with great views. Limit 8-10 participants Huron Valley Group, Sierra Club Catch Grand Island Ferry at 10 am on the 12th Fees will include boat tickets, camping fees, and food.
