Hike Bloomer #3with us, part of the Ortonville Recreation Area. This is considered a moderate hike about 4.5 miles long. There are beauiful rolling hills which are also used for X-country skiing in the winter. There is also a sledding hill. Take M-15 to Ortonville. Go East on Oakwood Rd. about 1 mile. A 4-mile, somewhat hilly walk in this historic arboretum alongside Hines Drive (near Northville) with both wooded and open terrain. 400 species of trees were planted here. This is Palm Sunday, but we probably won't find many palm trees. The spring buds should be breaking out. from New York to North Dakota. This time we will hike only a small Michigan section of it: from White Cloud (SW of Big Rapids) to Nichols Lake, total 25 miles. It might scare you - it is a long walk - but keep in mind that there is no elevation gain along this segment and there is a reward along the way: the lovely White River, small isolated lakes and a visit to an old schoolhouse, not to mention the charm of spring. 12:00 pm Campout And Hike On The Mason Tract
Using backpacks and canoes with canoe carts, we'll walk our gear a half of a mile into a quiet, remote, no motors lake to our rustic campsites under towering white pines. Loon, osprey and bald eagle sightings are common. In addition to canoeing plus hiking (or biking) on the trails around the lake, we will travel to the South Branch of the beautiful Au Sable River to hike on the Mason Tract trails. All campers will bring their own food with a group potluck on Saturday evening. There is no fee for this weekend outing except for the National Forest parking fee. Members and nonmembers are welcome. We have planned a moderately-paced 5-mile hike through the nature area hiking trails and the park perimeter on the lakeshore. Dress for May weather, call if weather is questionable. We'll do about 6-miles of moderately-paced hiking in this rolling, wooded park. The many sunny meadows will help us appreciate the cool shade of the woods. We'll hike 5-miles at a medium pace in this level, wooded park, partially following the Huron River. Bring water & boots; hike goes rain or shine. This will be a moderate 5-mile hike observing the resident deer and waterfowl as we explore the forested nature trails in the cool shade of the woods. stretch of the river - west of Ann Arbor. The livery will bus us upriver to Hudson Mills Metropark; then a 4-hour moderate paddle down to Delhi Metropark. We stop halfway for our picnic lunch. Enjoy a 5-mile hike on easy flat terrain through meadows, woods and over boardwalks. We will stop to view wildlife that includes nesting bald eagles, herons, egrets, a wide variety of waterfowl, and perhaps a muskrat. Hike goes in light rain, or shine. No sticker required for this County park. Bring trail snack, water and bug repellant. Meet in Flat Rock behind the Rite Aide on Telegraph and Gibraltar road. Hike 2.5 miles around Pickerel Lake in the Pinckney State Rec. Area w/ guest "Secret Hike" leader Barry Lonik; swim afterward. Either meet @ picnic table in front of Zingerman's Roadhouse at 1:00 pm to carpool or 1:45 pm @ the trail. Take Dexter-Ann Arbor Rd west thru Dexter; continue west on Island Lake Rd 3 miles to Dexter Townhall Rd; turn right, north, to N Territorial Rd; turn left, go west 1.5 miles to Hankerd Rd; turn right, go north 1 mile; turn right onto the Pickerel Lake access road. 10:00 am Plant Cedar Trees On The Au Sable River
Sierra Club volunteers will assemble with the Anglers of the Au Sable and Cedars of the Au Sable volunteers at the Gates Au Sable Lodge on Stephan Bridge Road, east of Grayling, to organize our teams, trees and equipment before proceeding to our designated stretches on the river. Bring work gloves, shovels, insect repellent, sun screen, canteens, etc. and plan to spend a few hours along the river planting trees. An enjoyable afternoon picnic at the Gates Au Sable Lodge will follow. Free and open to both Sierra Club members and nonmembers. (more)

Basic First Aid certification and Outdoor Leadership Training 101 (OLT 101) are required for all outings leaders by the National Sierra Club. Outdoor Leadership Training 201 (OLT 201) and CPR are required for more advanced outings leaders that lead outings that are more than an hour's hike away from the car. Lunch included.
