The Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Michigan Wilderness Heritage Act with a weekend of camping. The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness encompasses about 3,500 acres between Ludington and Manistee. We will base camp in a large, Group Campsite and day hike some of the trails and enjoy the nearby beach. Saturday night we will be treated to dinner in camp prepared by Chapter Chef Cecilia Garcia. Bring your own camping gear and food for other meals. Share the cost of camping fees and Saturday night dinner.

The SC Michigan Chapter is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Michigan Wilderness Act. Some West Michigan Sierrans will join their counterparts from across the state at the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, part of 90,000 acres of old-growth forests and pristine dunes and lakes protected by that Act. Let’s do this fantastic connector bike path between Lower Huron, Willow and Oakwoods Metroparks, south of Metro Airport. This is a nice hilly route that follows the Huron River for 30 miles round trip. We will stop and tour the Oakwoods Nature Center – ½ way. Lots of tree cover and shade, we will have our picnic lunch at the end of the ride. Check the map below to meet at Tulip Tree Picnic area in Lower Huron. Native plants are central to the design of many of the gardens at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. Connie Crancer, Native Plant Specialist, will show us native species resilience and use in bioswales that manage storm water, formal prairie wildflower garden, and more. Join West Michigan Sierrans as we do research on Spring Lake and Lake Michigan, on a real research vessel run by GVSU Grand Valley State University, out of Grand Haven, MI. We will collect samples, analyze them in the on-boat lab, and record the results. The boat holds 26 researchers, and previous trips have filled up fast! Grand Island Back Pack Trip

Grand Island is a national recreation area located in Lake Superior, just off the Munising and Pictured Rocks shoreline. We will back pack to Juniper Flats and Murray Bay campsites, spending two nights at each site with day hikes on the off days. Terrain is a mixture of sandy beaches and sandstone cliffs with great views. Limit 8-10 participants Huron Valley Group, Sierra Club Catch Grand Island Ferry at 10 am on the 12th Fees will include boat tickets, camping fees, and food.

Join the Anglers of the Au Sable, Cedars of the Au Sable and the Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club for the Annual Au Sable River clean up and cedar planting. We will be planting cedar saplings or maintaining previously planted cedars, so bring gloves, shovels, trowels, etc. An afternoon barbecue back at the Au Sable Lodge will follow. Overnight camping is optional but some of us will be camping in the area Saturday night Nonmembers welcome.
