Haiku is a style of poetry originating in Japan where it was used classically to describe a nature experience. In these programs, the naturalist will facilitate activities while the child and adult participate as a team, enjoying nature activities, walks and more. Every day is an adventure for children entering the 4th-6th grades when they make a connection with nature while learning survival skills such as using a compass, using a gps unit, tracking, fire building and archery at the Harris Nature Center June 22-25. Camp runs 9am-3pm Monday-Wednesday and 4-10pm on Thursday to explore the park at night, make supper and enjoy a campfire. The camps run from 9 am to 12 pm. They include 'Cool Critters' on July 8-9 and July 30-31 and 'Crafty Critters' on July 28-29. All camps include nature activities, walks, games and crafts. In these programs, the naturalist will facilitate activities while the child and adult participate as a team, enjoying nature activities, walks and more. The My Cub and I Nature Camp is for 1-3 year olds. Timber Tots Nature Camp is for 3-4 year olds. Camps meet at 9 am-10 am or 11 am-12 pm.  Nature Connection Counselor-in-Training Camp
Now older kids can have the best of two worlds. Children entering 6th-8th grade will learn to help younger campers have a good camp experience and will also hike, explore and play games with their own age group. This 4-day camp meets Tuesday-Friday July 14-17 at 9am-3pm. The fee is $125 for all four days. Participants should come dressed for weather conditions and must bring a sack lunch each day. Elementary children will discover nature, animals and plants this summer at the Harris Nature Center. Children entering kindergarten-3rd grade can join a Nature Connection Camp on Tuesday-Friday, June 23-26 for a full or half day of camp. Those staying all day must bring a sack lunch. Children entering kindergarten-1st grade can join 'Amazing Animals' and 'Wet & Wild, while children entering 2nd-3rd grade can join 'Things with Wings' and 'Reptiles & Amphibians'. It's always Earth Day at the Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road in Okemos and they are looking for volunteers to help in the park on Saturday July 18 at 9-11 am. Volunteers may help prepare flower beds, maintain trails and pull invasive plants in the woods. The Harris Nature Center is holding a Stewardship Morning once a month, April-October.
