Enhance your child’s science education at the Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road, in Meridian Township once a month through programs specifically designed to introduce & reinforce science curriculum for home-schooled & public-schooled children. The programs are open to children of all ages. The next Weekday Science Program, “Rocks Rock” is Friday, January 9 at 10 am or 1 pm and is about rock cycles and rock characteristics. Bring your best friend (2-footed or 4-footed) to the Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road for a guided hike through the moonlit woods on Friday, January 9 at 7:00 pm. Dogs must be on non-retractable leashes. Flashlights are permitted but not a necessity. The fee for this program is $2.00/ person due at the walk. Please call 517-349-3866 with questions. 7:00 pm

Sunday January 11, 2009- Starry Night Slide Presentation
Set against the darkness of the night sky the twinkling stars have fascinated man forever. Join a naturalist at the Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road, for a slide presentation about constellations and the stories surrounding them on Saturday, January 11 at 3:00 pm. Join Chicory Chipmunk at the Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road, in Meridian Township once a month for nature stories followed by games or a walk. The programs are open to preschool and elementary children. The next story time, “Fun in the Snow” is Thursday, January 15 at 10 am. Saturday January 17, 2009- Cross Country Ski Class
Glide through a winter wonderland & experience Michigan’s snow covered wild places. Learn everything you’ll need to know to safely cross-country ski on your own & spend time practicing at the Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road on Saturday January 17 from 9:30-11:30am. The fee is $15 for a half-day session if you bring your own equipment & $20 if you borrow nature center equipment. Dress appropriately for the weather. Space is limited, so call 349-3866 to have a registration for 9:30 am

- Snowshoe Class
Don’t miss out on your walks this winter…learn to snowshoe & nothing will stop you! Find out how to “shoe” & spend time practicing at the Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road on Saturday January 17 from 1-3pm. The fee is $15 for a half-day session if you bring your own equipment & $20 if you borrow nature center equipment.
This class includes tips from a Dick’s Sporting Goods expert. Dress for the weather. Space is limited, so call 349-3866 to have a registration form sent to y 1:00 pm

- Moonlight Ski and Shoe
Glide along the moonlit trails of the Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road in Meridian Township, as you ski or snowshoe through the sparkling snow on Saturday, January 17 from 6:30- 9:30pm. The moon will be full and the trails will be illuminated on this evening. There is a $2/person fee if you bring your own equipment and $8/person fee if you borrow our equipment. Please call ahead at 349-3866 to register and reserve your skis and snowshoes. 6:30 pm

Friday January 23, 2009- Friday Family Nights, "Snowflakes & Snowballs
Now there’s nature fun for families on Friday nights at the Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road, in Meridian Township. The next Friday Family Night will be January 23 at 6:30 to 8:00 pm with a topic of “Snowflakes & Snowballs” about snow science & animals in winter. There is a $5/family fee due at the time of the event. Please pre-register your family by calling 517-349-3866 to insure enough materials are available for the program. 6:30 pm

Saturday January 31, 2009- Winter Wonderland
Embrace winter at the Harris Nature Center. Enjoy winter hiking or try snowshoeing & cross country skiing on the natural trails. Cross country skis & a few pairs of snowshoes will be available to borrow. Watch dog sled demonstrations & visit with the dogs, warm up at the campfire, join the snow painting activity, watch ice sculptor Scott Miller create amazing animals, enjoy snacks, snowflake crafts & ham radio activities. This event continues regardless of weather or lack of snow 10:00 am
