- 2:00 pm Author Signing: Matt Bell, IN THE HOUSE UPON THE DIRT BETWEEN THE LAKE AND
In this epic, mythical debut novel, a newly-wed couple escapes the busy confusion of their homeland for a distant and almost-uninhabited lakeshore. They plan to live there simply, to fish the lake, to trap the nearby woods, and build a house upon the dirt between where they can raise a family. But as their every pregnancy fails, the child-obsessed husband begins to rage at this new world: the song-spun objects somehow created by his wife's beautiful singing voice, the giant and sentient bear that rules the beasts of the woods, the second moon weighing down the fabric of their starless sky, and the labyrinth of memory dug into the earth beneath their house. This novel, from one of our most exciting young writers, is a powerful exploration of the limits of parenthood and marriage—and of what happens when a marriage’s success is measured solely by the children it produces, or else the sorrow that marks their absence.

Through meticulous research, Hauter presents a shocking account of how agricultural policy has been hijacked by lobbyists, driving out independent farmers and food processors in favor of the likes of Cargill, Tyson, Kraft, and ConAgra. She demonstrates how the impacts ripple far and wide, from economic stagnation in rural communities at home, to famines in poor countries overseas. In the end, Hauter illustrates how solving this crisis will require a complete structural shift, a grassroots movement to reshape our food system from seed to table—a change that is about politics, not just personal choice.

Young “rootsgrass” band Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys has jumped into the forefront of today’s progressive roots music movement. Distinct vocals, tight harmonies, instrumental expertise, & creative arrangements are all essential characteristics of their unique sound. Instrumentally, they can turn on a dime, their arrangements based on bluegrass traditions but frequently dipping into swing jazz and popular song craft. Their sound is deftly guided by the clarion vocals of lead singer Lindsay Lou.

- 7:00 pm Mike Dundas presents The North Country Trail, A Well Kept Secret
The North Country National Scenic Trail, a part of the congressionally-created and federally-funded National Trails System (think the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails), is over thirty years old. It seems, however, to have remained relatively unknown to the American public. This is especially unfortunate for the state of Michigan, which contains the lion's share of the NCT's roughly 4,600 miles. Because of its (relative) youth compared to other trails in our National System the NCT has 'miles to go' before it can be regarded as truly finished. This presentation outlines the beauty, diversity, challenges, and opportunities associated with The Trail's development with a focus on the Chief Baw Beese Chapter - the southernmost Michigan chapter - of the North Country Trail Association. http://northcountrytrail.org/
